Schönbrunn Palace
The Habsburgs' summer palace on the western edge of Vienna: state rooms, a free park and a half-day trip from the Hofburg.

Most of Vienna's best-known sights sit within a short walk of the Hofburg, with two palaces a short ride away.
The Hofburg sits in the old town, and most of what visitors want to see is inside the Ring or just beyond it. Leave by Michaelerplatz and take Kohlmarkt to the Graben, then follow the pedestrian streets to Stephansplatz and St Stephen’s Cathedral. From there Kärntner Straße leads past the Vienna State Opera. The Albertina borders the Hofburg itself, so it pairs easily with a palace visit.
Beyond the Ring, Maria-Theresien-Platz leads towards the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the MuseumsQuartier. The Naschmarkt lies a little further out, between Karlsplatz and Kettenbrückengasse, and is easiest by U-Bahn.
Two palaces are worth a separate trip. The Belvedere is reached by tram D, and Schönbrunn Palace by the U4 from Karlsplatz. Give each one a half day rather than squeezing it between other stops.
The Albertina is the easiest add-on to a palace visit. Its official page lists daily opening from 10am to 6pm, and until 9pm on Wednesdays and Fridays (checked October 2026). For a long museum day, the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the MuseumsQuartier are linked by Maria-Theresien-Platz, which saves travel between them. The Naschmarkt stalls open at 6am Monday to Saturday, and many close between 6pm and 7pm, so go earlier in the day than the other sights.
Pair sights by area, because the old town clusters and the museum district clusters. Check closing days before you fix the order: the Naschmarkt stalls are closed on Sundays, and the Kunsthistorisches Museum has late opening on Thursdays in autumn 2026. For a ready-made order, see the Vienna itinerary. Combine this with tickets and tours, and read getting there for the transport routes.
